Notes from the Director GREGORY
COHEN
|
|
Marriage. I'm experienced in this topic. I have personally been
married twice (we won't discuss the first experiment) and my current matrimony has just passed it's
23'd anniversary. My parents were married 35 years; and if my father had lived longer, I have no
doubt they would've remained married for the rest of their years. Most of the people I know, if not
currently married, either have been or will be in the future.
I thoroughly believe that people were meant to be monogamous (at
the very least, serially so). Couples complete each other. I'm not saying that those partnerships
are easy or run smoothly I think that idealistic marriage doesn't exist. We're meant to have our
troubles, our trials, our tests - that's what strengthens us, what makes us grow, what teaches us
about our true selves.
Husbands and wives sometimes stray (don't worry, Honey, not me);
sometimes they are not as supportive as they should be of each others' goals and dreams; sometimes
they just purposely become hurtful. Sometimes the love becomes weakened; sometimes the friendship
disappears; but take this advice from an aging married man - the gift of knowing that someone is at
home who knows you better than you know yourself and still is willing to put up with you is a
blessing that I, for one, am not willing to give up.
I hope you all enjoy 'growing old' with Michael and Agnes For
those of you who've been married for decades, I hope you see a little bit of yourselves in them.
For those of you who will someday perhaps marry your love (currently known or as yet not
discovered), I hope you learn a little something from them. And for my friends for whom marriage is
still not a legal possibility, I hope you soon get the opportunity to experience all the joys and
pains as the rest of us.
So, if you ask if I believe in the state of matrimony, I'm afraid
I'd have to whole-heartedly answer, "I do, I do!"
