Arsenic and Old Lace
Feb. 24 thru Mar. 18
Directed by
Steve Julian
The play is a farcical dark comedy revolving around Mortimer
Brewster, a drama critic who must deal with his crazy, homicidal family and local police in
Brooklyn, NY, as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he
loves.
His family includes two spinster aunts who have taken to murdering
lonely old men by poisoning them with a glass of home-made elderberry wine laced with arsenic,
strychnine, and "just a pinch" of cyanide; a brother who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt and digs
locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar of the Brewster home (which then serve as graves for the
aunts' victims); and a murderous brother who has received plastic surgery performed by an alcoholic
accomplice, Dr. Einstein to conceal his identity.

Director's Notes

|
You know your family quite well, I’m sure. You know
their preferences, biases and proclivities, their hobbies and beliefs. You probably know everything
there is to know about your immediate circle of relatives. I have no doubt.
Mortimer Brewster does. An unwilling theatre critic, he intimately
knows and unfailingly loves his aunts, Abby and Martha. The sisters are charitable toward lonely
old men through acts of thoughtful kindness and warm hospitality. And they pour a mean glass of
wine.
Mortimer’s oldest brother, Teddy, on the other hand is simply crazy.
After all, he thinks himself to be Teddy Roosevelt. Bully!
Fortunately for us, Mortimer’s long-lost and ill-mannered third
brother Jonathan reenters their lives. His proclivities force Mortimer and his love, Elaine, to
question who’s the craziest of them all.
As you may well know, in each family, there are levels of
questionable mental health. Generally we tend to ignore it – or, at least, avoid being impolite
about it. But when faced with it square on… well, that’s Mortimer’s dilemma. Perhaps it isn’t
yours….
